In society’s digitized landscape, there has been an increase in accessible pornography that issues hurdles for marriages and families, especially those in faith communities. The damaging effects that erode trust, intimacy, and healthy family dynamics are well documented. The distinctive aspects of online pornography addiction have been explored by researchers in the accessibility, affordability, and anonymity.

Researching the Impact

The findings in Dr. Jill Manning’s research shows ingesting online pornography can contribute to distress in a marriage, a reduced intimacy between the husband and wife, and in extreme situations, separation and divorce. The issues above can be traced to pornography’s addictive nature and the emotional toll it plays on the marriage. This research shows how many feel betrayed by their spouse or even inadequate by not being able to meet the expectation pornography places on the marriage.  The unrealistic demands that pornography creates for the marriage cause satisfaction to plummet.

Unmasking the effects of pornography on marriage

Nathan Dickerson, the leader of “Masculine Mastery Brotherhood”, shares his perspective on this issue in this week’s Grace and Grains podcast. Dickerson highlighted the dishonesty found in pornography will disrupt the emotional safety of your spouse. “It’s not just the pornography that undermines all of that; it’s the dishonesty around it that really undermines it even more,” Dickerson identified. “It’s like, I’m shameful and then I won’t talk about it. I won’t be honest about it, and then it just becomes a secret. It’s a whole part of someone’s life that the spouse is not seeing, that’s not intimacy. If intimacy is ‘into me, you see,’ then there’s this whole aspect of the person who’s not being seen.”

He also tackled the wider implications surrounding spiritual practices, clarifying that the shame and guilt that pornography use causes can hamper the person from fully engaging in their faith.

Effective Approaches and Resources for accountability

From a faith filled viewpoint there are many ways to address pornography use, ranging from counseling and support groups to prayer and accountability partners. Some programs and resources that have high success rates and positive reviews are Celebrate Recovery and Covenant Eyes

Nathan Dickerson stressed the significance of having accountability in your life, especially as a man. “Men need brothers they can confide in,” Dickerson said. “Honesty is the starting point for freedom, and building a support system can help break the cycle of secrecy and shame.”

Exploring the Wider Impact

Open dialogue and constant education are vital for lowering the stigma around this issue. The true impact that online pornography use has on marriages and families will remain a topic that society will deal with until there is an honest question about the place pornography has in our society. For now faith based communities will play a pivotal role in creating environments for people and families to heal and address these situations.
